Here are some additional highlights of the conference from the Small Farm Program:

  • The 2nd edition of the Small Farm Handbook made its official debut just in time for the conference. The book draws upon the expertise of 32 experts from the University of California, with information about financial management, marketing and sales, postharvest handling and safety, growing crops, raising animals and labor management. The conference’s five workshops about farm management will include information from this new peer-reviewed book. Copies of the Small Farm Handbook can be ordered online.
  • The 2011 Pedro Ilic Awards were presented to outstanding farmers Allan and Mineca Griggs of Shasta County, and outstanding agricultural eduator Holly George of UC Cooperative Extension in Plumas and Sierra counties. The awards are named for the Fresno County farm advisor Pedro Ilic, whose untimely death in 1994 prompted the UC Small Farm Program to annually honor those who carry out his legacy of personal commitment to small-scale and family farming. Find out about this year's Pedro Ilic Award honorees or about the backgrounds of the awards.

This year’s conference was March 6 – 8 in San Jose. Visit the California Small Farm Conference website for more details.
